I remember that Peter Wellington had his hand in on the 2007 and 2008 PN from Gazzi in a woot offering from last year(?). Did he also play a role in the concoction of this juice?

The Pinot was quite a steal. I am wondering the same thing...

It was Scott Harvey, not Peter Wellington. I am unsure as to whether this was from Scott as well going all the way back to 2004 though

It's Scott Harvey, not Peter, who made the wine for Gazzi. And since I love his 2009 Amador White Label Syrah, I'm interested in the comparison to this one. I was hoping for the Pinot Noir not mixed with Syrah, but this has me curious.

Once I finish my drive I will check back and hope the answers are here and push me over the edge.

2013: 33 bottles. Last wine.woot: Diamond Ridge Cab Franc. Last split: Scott Harvey Barbera
2012: 91 bottles, 2011: 92 bottles, 2010: 74 bottles, 2009: 30 bottles, 2008: 3 bottles My CT

Actually, it was Scott Harvey.

Hmm. Reading previous Gazzi woots, in 2011 SH had his hands in the wine for about 7 years. That may put this in his window of winemaking...

Hopefully the reason will be "Scott Harvey".

Fact Sheet from the 2005 vintage:

Gazzi
The grapes used in the production of this delightful award wining wine were
grown at Gazzi Estate Vineyards on the sunny slopes overlooking San
Francisco Bay. This site is situated at the intersection of State Highway 37
and 121. This is where these grapes seem to thrive with ocean breezes
combined with calcareous gravely soils to nurture the creation of this full
bodied Syrah wine. The grapes were fermented to dryness and then aged
another year in French oak barrels prior to bottling.
– Scott Harvey Winemaker
Paired well with barbeque, lamb and steak.
Blend: 100% Sonoma Coast Syrah, Gazzi Estate Vineyard
Alcohol: 13.8%
Suggested retail price $24.00
The 2005 Gazzi Sonoma Cote D’or Syrah won a Gold Medal at the San
Francisco International Wine Competition and also a Gold Medal at the
Sacramento State Fair Wine Competition.

2004 sounds like it may be before SH's time at Gazzi. The first Gazzi/SH I remember seeing here is the '06 PN.

I'll research and report back. Autobuy for me if this is Scott's handiwork.

Agreed!
Could someone also explain notes on a typical syrah? I primarily buy PN, Cab, and red blends. Anything specific that is usual? Thanks!

Interesting that SH stated they stopped Syrahs in 2008. One has to wonder why...

scott! it was scott! was he involved in this wine? i loved the previous offerings of syrah and pinot noir...the little bit of syrah gave the pinot noir a back bone. quite delicious.

Oops... sorry... I knew it was one of the favorites (I am drinking the last glass of a 2008 inzin right now...). I agree that the PN (06 and 07, not 07 and 08 if I remember right now...) was a tremendous QPR. I am tempted to go in on this deal based on that alone..

Wow. This really is going to be the first all wine Wine Woot-Off, isn't it? My sympathies to all folks in the numerous states where Wine Woot is not allowed to ship alcohol. Which includes my poor parents in Alabama. Hi, mom and dad! Yeah. No love for you, this Wine Woot-Off. Maybe next time.

On the plus side, I do understand that this is the pinnacle of success for people who insist that Wine Woot should be all about the wine. IMHO, it's just nice to throw a bone to those who, through no fault of their own, don't live in a state to which wine can be shipped. And also? Toffee. Brandini Toffee. I'm all out and really hope that this Wine Woot-Off isn't toffee-free. But congrats to the all wine Wine Woot-Off folks. It's all about you, this time.

2004 was the year that Scott sold Folie a Deux and started other ventures. All the info points to him being the winemaker in 2004. That alone is enough for me.

I agree that the '09 white label syrah was great and the description of this wine sounds very similar. Not sure if the pH levels are the same.

I am in for one. SH at $13/bottle?

If I remember Scott's comments from the PN/Chard offering, the winery had good grapes and he was pleased with the wine produced (so was I...). The winery itself, however, was not stellar at marketing/distribution, thus incredibly under priced delicious wines available to (unload on) us! In for one!

Except that he was the winemaker (or "consulting winemaker") for the 2004 Astrale e Terra Estate Syrah. I don't know if that is unusual, but is one more clue to consider.

To tell you the truth, there is 16% Syrah in the 2007 because in 2008 we decided to no longer make Syrah. So the the remaining Syrah in the vineyard was grafted over to Pinot. But, I still had the 2007 Syrah in the cellar. So, I began blending it off into the rest of the wines. Doesn't blend well with Chardonnay, so it all went into the 2007 Pinot, 2008 Pinot, 2009 Pinot, etc. I do like what it does for the Pinot because it adds to the over all flavor or character that Sears Point gives a wine.

Scott himself on the first Gazzi offer, March of last year. I'm not sure that seals this '04 as being his. I think I'll listen to his voicemail and report back (unless someone beats me to it.)

Edit: He says he's been making wine with them for "about the past 7 years", I think/hope this makes it under that threshold.

I speculate that I have spent way too much time tonight on this tomfoolery. Goodnight, everybody, and may the new day bring each and every wooter's heart's desire, a bag of the most random crap imaginable!

There is a dearth of information available on this wine. I'm sitting until someone can confirm Scott's involvement in this one.

That is what the other woot sites are for no? People that can or cannot be shipped wine or those with no preference to wine? They did set a precedence by allowing non-wine products though...

clearly need a food.woot.com or gourmet.woot.com or something like that.

Yeah, tough to tell - he mentions being involved for "about 7 years" and the recording was March 2011, so would that include a 2004 Syrah? Not sure - but I hope so since I took the plunge. I'm also banking on the fact that the roughly 15% syrah included in his previous pinot offers really transformed those into the kind of wine I like to drink. Not typically a PN fan, but those were much more flavorful...

Scrolling through those first comments reminded me how much I liked those Pinots, what a great deal that case was, and what a fantastic surprise the Chardonnay turned out the be. Also how much I miss seeing Nightghost's posts around here.

May need some Scott Harvey backing on this one to get the order shipped again. For some reason, North Carolina isn't listed for the Gazzi offers. But the last two I've been successful with, despite being unlisted. We'll have to see - they definitely won't be able to ship it to my address in California. So either I get a large shipment of wine, or else no harm done to my Visa.

From the description:

"Still has young wine character and has not developed bottle bouquet yet."

I have a grasp on young wine character. But can someone tell me what "bottle bouquet" is? This is different from the bouquet of the wine? The description makes this sound as though its not a good thing...

Think I had one of those last week. I'm currently working through a bottle of the Tallulah GSM, because an earlier poster reminded me of the strong possibility it may show up on the woot-off. Seems like a bargain to me - hope I'm online if/when it surfaces.

In for one! Despite the unsolved mystery of SH's hand in this batch (which invariably drives up the price/enjoyment of a wine), I was convinced by the 2005's aging in French Oak and Sac State Fair gold medal (on website).

I'm betting on French Oak and similar accolades for the 2004. But it's a bet... =)
