I was in Costco (Pentagon City) yesterday and happened to run into Sean, seemingly an ass't manager for wine. I complained the only two zins they had were the most commercial of zinfandels and no bargain. A very basic brand of basic cava was almost 3x what I can buy it for in a liquor store 3 miles away. I also asked about why they only stocked a few of the Kirkland wines I have read written up here and elsewhere online.
And here's what he said...
1. The Pentagon City store is considered their #3 wine store in the country for Costco.
2. All the wine buying for all Va. and Md. Costcos and perhaps adjoining states is done by some woman in Leesburg, Va.
I found each somewhat surprising. I'm not surprised Costco sees the DC area as a wine mecca--its the #3 metro area for wine in the country. But if so, why the very limited selection??
