If anyone is interested I reviewed the Petite Petit back in June:

My Petite Petit Review is here

While I haven't had this vintage of the Earthquake Petite it has generally been a pretty big, rich and hedonistic example of the varietal. I have also found it and the Michael David wines in general to be consistent in quality and style over the years.

I've never had the Windmill so I can't speak to it at all.

Like a lot of wooters here we've had the Earthquake. I remember it being a huge wine. Lots and lots and lots (did I stress lots) of ripe fruit. If this is your style than you'll LOVE this wine (very much along the tastes of Mr. Parker).

We had this at a restaurant given to us by the owner. We thought being an '05 the tannins would be mouth tearing but surprisingly they weren't. Everything was in balance and we had this paired with pizza. Again, surprisingly, it did not overwhelm the meal. I would have thought it needed a big, fatty steak.

Would I order it again? No. Not because it was a bad wine but more because it's not my style.

Why is there so much wine left at the end of my money?

Where the rest of my money goes

Hedonistic is the perfect adjective.
That's exactly what it was.
Hedonistic.

Could this possibly be the shortest list of ship-to states ever? It seems surprising for a wine that many people have commented on being widely available. Maybe it is because of the fact that this wine is widely distributed that the winery doesn't really need to depend on direct-to-consumer sales, therefore, the lack of ship-to states?

malogus

If I could, I would be in for this deal (stupid AZ). I've have quite a few of the Micheal David wines, and they are all pretty tasty. Havent had the Petite Petit, but I have had the Earthquake, and would definitely drink it again. They also have a bottle called Lust that is probably my favorite from that winery.

Typically most of their wines are very fruity and pretty low tannins.

If you're a PS-head and the price significantly beats the stores and it ships to your state (or a woot-legger) this should be a no-brainer. These are solid examples of the appellation and should be in your taste portfolio.

If you're new to Petite Sirah and are curious about all the hype, the price makes this a good introductory sampler (though not a particularly broad one) Even though they are all from the same appellation and producer you do get three different styles and presentation. This would also serve as a good lesson in diversity among varietally labeled wines.

If these are readily available, I'd give it some thought. For example, all three of these are available from the PA state stores and total $44.47 before sales tax (~another $3): a negligible difference (and you can pay cash). That's not a totally fair comparison as w.w doesn't ship to Pennsylvania -- so someone in-state would have to add travel to and from a wootlegger to this deal -- and PA can negotiate incredible pricing, but it does make the point that one should be aware of what's in your local market (true for any online shopping).

Of course, supporting wine.woot is a noble goal in itself. I'd probably be in if I lived in a ship-to state. These are solid wines. Enjoy!

I've only had the Petite Petit from this group, but I loved it.
Fruity and slightly sweet. Usually I find PS too strong for my palate, but the PV really softens it up and balances it out.
Paid $15.99 at Cost Plus. High quality wine for a good price.

I am new to Petite Sirah and will take your recommendation in for 2. I've bought wine blends that had 15% or less Petite Sirah in them and am curious as to the full experience. Thanks.

I have family in OH and I remember their liquor laws being somewhat hard to understand for someone not used to the system. Here in KS we're getting a lot more lenient - a couple of years ago Sunday liquor purchases were finally allowed (losing sales to MO, I'm sure) and in July of this year we were finally allowed to buy wine from out-of-state wineries we'd never been to. Not exactly being in wine country has made wine.woot a great way to try a lot of wines we wouldn't otherwise have access to. So though I may complain from time to time about a lack of KS on the list, I do appreciate the work you all do.

for any of the folks on the fence, and who may be familiar with Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa, on a recent visit there, the sommelier at the restaurant highly recommended the Earthquake PS. We got a bottle. It was Wonderful.

Im not good at getting into wine details, but lets just say, at this price, Im in for three...

Elvis Random 4 pack (lots) | Rasmussen PS (lots) | Parker Station Quartet (some) | Poizin Zinfandel Trio (few) | G Saké (few) | Helix by Reininger Quartet (some) | 2004 Highway 12 Cab Blend Trio (some) | Chateau Souverain Zinfandel Single-Vineyard Sampler Trio (lots) | FFC Reserve 2005 Pinot Noir (lots) | Mosaic White Quartet (some) | Stuart Cellars Temecula Trio (some) | Wellington Cab Collecton Trio + 1 (some) | Fife Redwood Valley Trio (lots) | Chaucer Mead (some) | Mosaic Meritage (lots)

As it's PS, and relatively inexpensive, I impuslsively went in for 2 right at 1am last night when the offering popped up. If any other NYers want one of the sets (or any of the individual bottles) I would be willing to part with one. With already having over 500 bottles, I don't exactly need more. Just clicked so fast, I couldn't stop myself.

Do we know with regular shipping when this wine would likely reach Northern VA? I'm traveling back to California to see my family for the holidays and would hate to find that my wine gets sent back, lost, or otherwise sits in a UPS warehouse and spoils because I can't get the timing right.

Warning: Rant follows.

What is this DEALS site that has been mentioned? I used the URL that was posted a few hours ago and got a message saying that I am apparently not special enough to be allowed in.

I was actually thinking about buying some of this PS offering. But if Woot has decided I'm not "special," I suppose I should take my un-special credit card and go elsewhere.

End of rant. Thank you for indulging such an un-special comment.

(Oh, I guess I wasn't quite done ranting. Now I am.)

The site is currently in beta, and "they" made the decision to enlist the black squares, then the purple squares to try to debug the site. As I assume, these categories represent smaller populations, they can limit the amount of repetitive feedback on stuff that is broken. And they can say it is because we are special, or "better than everyone else" having wasted countless hours and dollars.

The Deals site is in beta still. It isn't open to everybody yet until they get it all sorted out. Right now it's only open to people who have placed 50+ orders on the Woot sites and until very recently it was only open to people with 100+ orders.

It's rather like http://www.onedaybuys.com/ in that there are items listed from other Internet discount retailers. At least that's what's been up thus far.

Legally, Arizona is a tough (maybe impossible) nut to crack and Maynard really doesn't have any problem selling the Shinola or Chupacabra (the two wines that would probably show up here). The other pricier offerings are likely outside of the realm of what would sell here and in all cases.

Until recently, I would have said he also doesn't have the volume or inventory (yet) to put together anything WD could market, but with the Wed/Thu 2-day deal, that really does open the door for some more 'boutique' offerings of more limited quantity.

As awesome as it would be to have MJK come to discuss his wines here, this place would turn into a fanboi scene in a heart-beat and it would sell out before noon and he'd probably never even get say, "Howdy."

Michael David = 7 Deadly Zins, right?

I would really like to hear Loweeel's take on these. Anyone seen him?

Thanks, woopdedoo, jplamb, and BobboinAVL. I appreciate the explanation, but I’ll still have to think about whether I’m motivated to buy today’s Wine.Woot offering. I know that rationally they’re not connected, but I never claimed to be limited to rational behavior.

Hi- My name is Melissa Phillips Stroud and Michael David is my family's winery (Mike is my dad and David is my uncle.) I wanted to explain a little about our shipping policies. Each state has their own shipping laws that widely vary, however direct shipping is very important to us (especially with our wine club). But because we are distributed in all 50 states we can have extra problems compared to some wineries. Some states, say Ohio for example, we cannot ship to because we have a wholesaler for the state. It is illegal in some states to ship to a given state where you have a distributor, and we sell throughout the state of Ohio. Also, with the size of our winery we are limited to where we can ship. You have to produce under a certain amount of cases/gallons to be able to ship to some states. The good news is that states are opening up more and more and our state list will only grow!

Yep, MD is heavily distributed, which also may throw a monkey wrench into the deal. The fact that they are bound to a distributor may preclude the possibility of direct sales. Wine sales law is really hokie.

I had dinner with the NC MD distributor not too long ago.

Work has been busy! I have to earn money to buy PS.

This is a very good deal. The selling point with this is really on the price side. The quality is nothing to sneeze at, but these are not Foley, Rasmussen '01 Reserve, or Vincent Arroyo.

Quality-wise, I'd put this about around where the Ursa offering was (speaking of, I just cracked my last bottle of the vineyard blend last night and it was drinking very PleaSantly)but with a wider quality spread among the bottles -- the Earthquake is higher (I'd say mid-high -- much like T-Vine, if any of you have had that), the Windmill is lower (but still nice -- sort of like the Sebastiani THE CRUSHER PS if you've had that).

The Petite Petit is a really nice, structured bottle that is more for old-world palates -- the PV provides nice back end that really structures the exuberantly new-world Lodi PS fruit.

The tannins are not typically face-smashing in Michael-David wines (or Lodi PS, for that matter).

Richard Auffrey (aka "The PaSsionate Foodie") sampled 6 different PS wines a while back, inc. the '06 Petite Petit and the '05 Earthquake.

He didn't like the Earthquake, but I think it is because he didn't allow it to open up properly -- the funk blew off and the wine opened up because it benefited GREATLY from some air.

I'm in Northern Virginia as well, I used to always have things shipped to my office because there is always someone there to sign for it. Unfortunatey the pinheaded management banned all alcohol from the premises even if it's double wrapped in a shipping box. I got a small box at the UPS store and every body ships there. The UPS store guys send me an email when it arrives.
