So, fresh on the heels of successfully making homemade yogurt, my wife wants to tackle laundry detergent. Seems simple enough, some washing soda, some borax, some dawn, some water. Bam, done. Now.....do you think I can find all of these things in one store? It appears as though I can get Washing Soda at Walmart, but not Borax. I can get Borax at Target, but not Washing Soda. I assume they both carry Dawn. Stupid stores.

I did the home made laundry detergent a while ago... It involved grating a bar of soap....I don't remember the brand... I think I used Dr. Brauners Lavender, borax and something else..... yes it was cheap....I stopped using it because I don't think it did as good of job as the commercial brands...

good luck...

This one has no grating. you use dawn, which supposedly makes it work better. we'll see. I figure for the 10 bucks the ingredients will cost no big deal. if they don't work together, i'll use them individually. if it does work as a laundry soap that'll be dirt cheap soap. like a buck a gallon.

I would absolutely love this, but for some reason my wife won't use anything except for Tide, which of course is the most expensive brand. If I had my way I would get the Kirkland brand from CostCo which is triple the loads for half the price.

I used to be a Tide fanatic. I got over that pretty quick when Purex got my stuff just as clean for like 2 bucks on sale.

The bummer is that Tide seems to be the only one that has the perfume/dye free stuff that actually cleans and is truly perfume/dye free. This of course is not carried at my costco, so I am relegated to watching for sales at the Safeway/Lucky and stocking up. I have tried the all, kirkland, and many other brands version of the perf/dye free, but they still irritate my skin.

Perhaps I'm just a bigger slob than you, but every time I've tried to switch brands from Tide I end up very disappointed in the cleaning results- I end up using Shout on just about every piece of laundry that goes in the machine until the bottle is gone and I go back to Tide...

One of the few branded/ripoff type items I'm religious about... Of course I'm one person so a big bottle o Tide lasts me like 3+ months.

interesting, I have found the exact opposite... the All does the best, Kirkland is ok, but Tide irritates me.

I actually am pretty cleanly, the kids on the other hand apparently don't know how to eat. Their clothes all come clean though. Great thing is, if they do make a mess we can treat and wash the item right away. With 3 kids, there's ALWAYS a load of laundry to be done.

My problem the first time I came to the States was that US commercial detergent was the only stuff that ever left yellow marks under the arms of any white Tshirts I had. Persil and the other European brands never did that.
Tide appears to be less bad than the others, so far.

We finished our last group this morning (Cabs between $12 & $25), then selected the Best of Reds (17 categories). Then after lunch, we selected Best in Show from the Top White/Red/Sparkling/Dessert wines. Riesling won from Finger Lakes.

Yep, that Chateau Frank BdN bottle is hard to miss once you've seen it...

I'm pretty sure the Chateau Reneau Semi-Dry bottle next to it must have been the winner then. ;)

hah! I just realized that the photo could be viewed in a larger size. I've had a bubbly Chateau Frank reisling and guessed that maybe that was the varietal.

As an aside, I've never had a Chateau Frank (sparkling) that I enjoyed.

Chateau Lafayette Reneau Dry Riesling

Chateau Frank Pinot Noir/Meunier Sparkling (2006?)

Fenestra Meritage

D. Galleano Winery Sherry (Scott used to source his Zin grapes for the InZinerator from him, I think).
