How (if at all) does the PH level effect the flavor of this type of wine?

I was wondering because this is one of the better deals I have seen on here. This usually retails for $50 per bottle. So it's like buy one, get two FREE.

Thanks, WineDavid!

Not so sure about that. A 750 mL Elu runs around $60. I doubt there'd by 3 for $50. Plus they have this exact vertical for $75 on the website with 375 mL bottles.

I agree the picture certianly looks like 375ml bottles, not that the winery doesn't also sell these in 750ml but the proportions of the picture look 375ml to me.

Would really like to hear if these are 750's, cause if they are, then this is the deal of the year on Woot.

The picture is definitely a 375....we're supposed to assume it's 750 if a size is not listed though aren't we?

On my last trip out to Sonoma, I was kindly advised (by the folks at Papapietro Perry) that 375's don't age as well as 750's.

I'd love to hear the St. Supery people weigh in on that as far as these wines are concerned.

i'm a bit confused...are these sweet wines? i don't know what a residual sugar of .02 means.

Still a good deal with 375s. Works out to about $35 per bottle on a $50-$60 retail wine.

Likely a pass, though, since that $30+ point is not easy to cross for me.

A residual sugar of .02 means they are NOT sweet. These are cabernet blends so they will be dry wines.

thanks. i was thrown off by the size and shape of the bottle...i usually only see sweet wines in those bottles.

Lenkeit

St. Supéry also has a 750 ml vertical of Élu - same years - on their web site. Price: $210.00 Club price: $168.00. So, yeah, this would be one heck of a good deal. The price for the 375 ml bottles is $75, with the Club price being $60. So, even with shipping you're doing at least $5 better than the Club members (more when you're in for two or three).

Not sweet. 2 g/L is around the threshold for tasting sweetness in a wine. .02 g/L would be an extraordinarily low number. Often RS is written in g/100 mL, which then would translate roughly into the % of residual sugar.

Even if the number is a mistake (wrong units, ignore complex sugars that aren't fermented, etc.), these should be dry wines.

Yep....it's not a bad deal just not an amazing deal like it would have been had these been 750's. I find it strange that the 750's are more than double the price of the splits, usually you'd get a discount buying the standard size bottles and pay a surcharge for a split not the other way around.

I'm still on the fence on this one.

What's the breakdown of new and used barrels for these wines? Is the new oak French, or both French and American?

While I'm not going in on this, I think it's a really neat little offer.

When prev. commenters are saying 375s don't age as well, what they're getting at is that, in particular, they're not going to age as long as 750s... But this is a great chance to snatch up some definitely not-new (a good thing!) juice from a winery on Highway 29 and have a taste after it's been advanced in age *for you* under the loving care of the St. Supery peeps.

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and guess you might not want to leave these around tooooooo terribly much longer, but this seems like an awesome chance to be able to do a full vertical tasting in a smaller group than normal, as you're going in increments of a half bottle of each, rather than the full bottle which might be a little overwhelming. Very unique, very cool deal!

I had a BV "burgundy" from the 50's in a 375. Tasted a bit over the hill but otherwise wasn't too shabby. 375 ages a bit quicker but it's certainly not going to die on you in the next 5 years

OK! Well, I'm in...just bought one. I'd love to be a rat, if allowed. There are three folks here, all with different tastes/preferences in their vinos and other consumables, and all enjoy the experience of taste testing. My son is almost 22 and has a fondness for complex red wines and stout dark beers. I love the white wines mostly, and my hubby has a penchant for fine cognacs and bourbons, but also has a taste for red blends akin to BV Dulcet. I think it would be interesting to have input from the three of us, given the diversity, don't you? Thanks for this offering, WD!

That generic BV "burgundy" could really be quite good. In some years (1970 and 1978 immediately come to mind), BV held significant amounts of it back from the market for several years, releasing it at a premium with sufficient bottle age to be fairly mature. Some of the 1970 was released into the market as late as 1980 or 1981 - it was available wholesale in New York in 1981. It was great juice at a price just below the then current Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon.

It was an interesting demonstration of what might have been had we not had Prohibition and had the California wine industry followed the California Wine Association model of holding stocks of fine wine for aging so that you could buy fully mature wines in the ordinary course at your neighborhood store.

How good is this deal?

Can it really be November already? Seems like just yesterday it was Halloween. Well, at least this deal is something to soften the blow.

St. Supery Elu is a great blend. Even in the 375 bottle, I'm sure a '01 will age just fine, IMHO. I have some of the '01 and '02 and they were great to my taste. For me, 375 bottles are great because I really only like one glass or 2 at a time... I'm in and available to rat.

My son and I have been waiting for St Supery for a while. They were at a local wine exhibit two years ago. We love the Virtu and Muscato, but have never purchased the Elu. I was able to snag some mis-priced Virtu for $20 a bottle earlier this year.

Thanks WD. Would rally like to rat this!!!!

For counter perspctive, add in a general $/ml premium on splits and it offers a unique 'tasting' opportunity for an expensive wine that you wouldn't necessarily buy otherwise.

I'm sitting on this fence. It's pointy and hurts my bum.
