2009 Roessler Pinot Noir, Griffin’s Lair, Sonoma Coast
Complex and dark, our Griffin’s Lair Pinot Noir shows off the classic character of this Sonoma Coast vineyard.  The aromatic profile is full of dark, foresty scents and a meaty, savory character with just enough eucalyptus, fennel, and mint to add lift. Bright fruit on the palate joins the darker tones from the nose, providing a broad mouthfeel that stretches through a lingering finish of currant, earth tones, and leather.

The Griffin’s Lair Vineyard is located on a windy hill in the Petaluma Gap, overlooking the San Pablo Bay in the southernmost part of Sonoma Coast. With 22 acres in all, 17 acres of Griffin’s Lair is devoted to Pinot Noir. Facing east/southeast, the fruit receives morning sun, fresh breezes from the bay, and cool moisture from the fog that creeps inland. Meticulously tended vines ensure our Griffin’s Lair fruit is consistently dense and complex.

2009 Roessler Pinot Noir Savoy, Anderson Valley
Dark fruit, rose petal and hints of spicy oak greet the nose while expansive blackberry, mushroom, and dried herbs build on the palate. The mouthfeel is creamy and persistent with textured tannins framing the lush fruit through a long, balanced finish.

Rising from the valley floor along gently rolling hillsides, Savoy Vineyard’s southern exposure is a great complement to Anderson Valley’s naturally perfect soils. Found northwest of the town of Philo, the vineyard was planted in the foothills, its rows waving across the gentle slopes and knolls of the land. Cloaked by these hills, the vines feel less of the ocean breeze and enjoy slightly warmer temperatures than nearby vineyards. The resulting fruit is serious and dark with solid structure and ageability, while crisp acidity leads to vibrance and vigor.

2009 Roessler Pinot Noir, Clos Pepe, Sta. Rita Hills
This wine brims with personality, expressing voluminous subtleties on the nose: baking spices, forest floor, dried meats and leather. A palate of powerful black cherry is bolstered by fresh acidity and rides along fine, structured tannins through a luxuriously long finish.

The Pepe family farms its 25 acres of Pinot Noir sustainably and meticulously. Steve and Catherine Pepe work with a single, devoted vineyard team year round to care for the vines, from winter pruning to autumn harvest. The vineyard’s tierra sandy loam soils are rich in calcium and calcareous shale, producing low-vigor vines and a lowyield crop of mineral- laden, intensely flavored fruit. Normal yields are 1-2 tons per acre of Pinot Noir, less than half the yield that is allowed in Burgundy’s Grand Cru AOC system.

2009 Roessler Pinot Noir, Sanford & Benedict, Sta. Rita Hills
Planted in 1971 by Richard Sanford, this is the oldest Pinot Noir vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley.  The very cool climate of the Sta. Rita Hills and the terrific soil composition give wines from the Sanford & Benedict vineyard an excellent balance of fruit and structure.  The attention to detail in the vineyard is evident in the complexity of the finished wine.

2009 Roessler Pinot Noir, Gap's Crown, Sonoma Coast
Gap’s Crown sits high up on the slopes of the Petaluma Gap, where cool ocean breezes blow inland from the Pacific to create a terrific climate for growing Pinot Noir.  We harvest a classic combination of clones from different sections of the vineyard, with the fruit character of Dijon 667 and the structure and depth of Dijon 115 coming together in a complex expression of the site.

2009 Roessler Pinot Noir, Hein Family Vineyard, Anderson Valley
Located in Anderson Valley near the town of Philo, the Hein Family Vineyard was planted between 1997 and 1999.  The gentle south/southwest slope and cool growing climate provide the perfect conditions for growing amazing Pinot Noir, and the clonal combination of Pommard and Dijon 777 and 115 enhance the complexity and depth of this wine.  Deep, dark fruit and brooding intensity stand out as hallmarks of this vineyard, and are accompanied by great structure, concentration, and balance.

2009 Roessler Pinot Noir, Shea Vineyard, Willamette Valley
Originally planted in 1989, the Shea Vineyard holds 135 acres of some of the finest Pinot Noir in Oregon.  Dick and Dierdre Shea farm the vineyard with an eye toward sustainability and take great care in providing remarkable fruit that is a pleasure to vinify.  At 400-600 foot elevation, the vineyard boasts sedimentary soils, sloping terrain, and a variety of clones, all contributing to the final complexity and nuance of our Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir.

Roessler Wines

Since 2000, Roessler Wines sought out relationships with premier growers as far north as Willamette Valley and as far south as Sta. Rita Hills.  Our vision was to source distinctive fruit from the most respected vineyards in California and Oregon, and create expressive, complex wines that demonstrate each site.  The winemaking style has always reflected this philosophy, with minimal intervention and manipulation.  The result is a portfolio of wines from four appellations: Anderson Valley, Sonoma, Sta. Rita Hills in California, and the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
