Monticello? Is it me you're looking for?

There's a lot about Thomas Jefferson we don't really know. One thing's for sure though, he was quite the wine connoisseur.

Thomas Jefferson was a pretty amazing dude. He did so many things for this country that a lot of people don't even know about. For instance, he invented electricity, the light bulb and time travel.

He was also really honest. Like, so honest that people called him "Honest Tom." One time he chopped down a cherry tree, and when asked if he had done it he replied, "I cannot tell a lie. I did. And also yes, those jeans do make you look fat."

Perhaps his greatest contribution to society, however, is his Monticello Vineyards Napa Valley Rose of Syrah. You see, he was inspired by the fruit of that felled tree to make a wine with a lovely pink hue. And he so loved its freshness and balance that he once proclaimed, "Wine from Oak Knoll is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."

I know you're skeptical. I was too. How could a man from the 1700s produce a well-balanced wine from a completely different side of the country in 2012? TIME TRAVEL, remember? I know. Just let it all sink in.

Features

2013 Monticello Vineyards Rose of Syrah, Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley 750ml 2-Pack

The wine has a beautiful deep salmon pink color, with a vibrancy and freshness emanating from the glass. In its own way, it tastes much as it appears in the glass. The aromas are subtle and light hints of floral tone, light strawberry tones. On the palate the wine displays a vital freshness, with a vigorous framework of acidity that provides a wonderful counterbalance to the lighter, more refined fruit within.

We really enjoy drinking Rose in the warm summer months, and have grown even fonder of the drier, crisper styles in recent years. Towards that end, we’ve been doing a special early pick of portions of our Syrah vineyard so that we can pick dedicated fruit for Rose production.

These early picks have nice aromas, fresh acidity and make wonderful rose wines, particularly when combined with rose made from the saignee (juice bleed) from Syrah grapes picked two months later from the same block. The grapes are whole cluster pressed immediately upon arriving on the crush pad, so we can isolate the juice from the darkly pigmented skins while only pulling a light bit of vibrant pink color. The juice is fermented in stainless steel to preserve its freshness and aroma profile, then aged in either small stainless or neutral barrels for 6 months prior to bottling. Drink now through 2016.

2012 Monticello Vineyards Rose of Syrah, Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley 750ml 2-Pack

Our Rose of Syrah makes a great summer wine for the adventurous wine enthusiasts trying to beat the heat. Inviting aromas of cherry and strawberry fill the glass. The mouthful is crisp and dry with tart cranberry and Granny Smith apple on the palate. Light-bodied with vibrant acidity and spice guide the way to a refreshing tasting experience.

The 2012 Rose of Syrah was harvested on two separate picks. It is 100% estate grown from our vineyards.

The early pick was in late August, and the grapes were picked at low sugar and high acid. This first wine was almost clear with a very light tinge of pink, low in alcohol and had a bracing acidity. The second pick was nearly two months later in mid-October. This fruit was fully ripe, deep in color and full of spicy dark berry fruit. For the rose, we immediately saigneed (bled) the juice after crushing to avoid too much color and tannin extraction. This second wine was a nice Copper River salmon color, was higher in alcohol, lower in acidity and had nice spicy fruit. Through trials, we blended the early and later picks together. Our goal was to make a dry rose, low in alcohol and tart on the palate, that could be enjoyed on its own in the summer, or be paired with some nice light summer fare I really enjoy the tartness of the wine, as it is in contrast to other riper offerings that we have on our tasting menu.

Owner:
Corley Family
Founded:
1969
Location:
Oak Knoll District, Napa, CA

We are very proud to be a family owned and managed winery. Our father, Jay Corley, came to Napa Valley in 1969 seeking land to plant and grow an estate vineyard. Thirty-five plus years later, sons Kevin, Chris and Stephen manage the winery: Kevin is our Winegrower and President, Chris is our Winemaker, and Stephen is our Director of Wine Sales. We are a small winery producing approximately 15,000 cases of wine annually designated MONTICELLO VINEYARDS, CORLEY RESERVE and CORLEY.

In 1969 our father, Jay Corley, began searching for an appropriate site to grow wine grapes and quickly recognized that the best wines in the United States were made from grapes grown in the Napa Valley. Since his personal interest was in Burgundian-style wines, he chose to initially focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and therefore acquired land in what is now known as the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley in 1970. The Oak Knoll District is in southern Napa Valley, just north of the town of Napa, and with its cooler temperatures, the Oak Knoll District is ideal for growing these varietals.

In 1980, we hired a winemaker to oversee the harvest and crushing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay grapes for our MONTICELLO VINEYARDS wines. In 1982, we moved into our state of the art winery on our Home Ranch Vineyard and also produced our first CORLEY RESERVE wines. MONTREAUX Brut followed in 1983, Pinot Noir in 1984, Merlot in 1990, CORLEY Proprietary Red Wine in 1999; Cabernet Franc in 2003 and Syrah in 2004.

Our over-riding philosophy is that great wines are made in the vineyards. This is why we have made such a tremendous commitment to ownership of the most suitable land for our grapes. Already satisfied with the strength and quality of our Oak Knoll estates for our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir we set out in pursuit of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the warmer districts of Napa Valley.

Today we farm five vineyards in the Napa Valley - our Home Ranch Vineyard and Knollwood Vineyard in the Oak Knoll District planted to Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah vines and our State Lane Vineyard in Yountville, Tietjen Vineyard on Niebaum Lane in Rutherford and Ehlers Lane Vineyard in St. Helena each planted to Cabernet Sauvignon.

Jay, Kevin, Chris and Stephen invite you to visit us in Napa Valley on our Home Ranch Vineyard.

“We are confident that you will enjoy our wines and invite you to share them
with friends and family as we so proudly do.”

— The Corley Family
