Whine & Dine

Nothing wrong with a man who knows what he wants in a good wine. Just as long as he doesn't throw a temper tantrum when he doesn't get it.

"Thanks for coming out with me tonight, Lisa. I'm having a really nice time."

I am too. Thanks for inviting me.

"So how's your roast pork. Can I have a bite, pleeeeeease?"

Uh, sure. Yeah, it's really good. Here you go.

"Mmm. That IS good. How would you say it pairs with your Mahoney Vineyards Carneros Syrah?"

Really well, actually. The blueberry and black cherry nose of this 2008 complements it well.

"I think I'll order a glass. Excuse me, waiiiiiiter? Can I pleeeease have a glass of the Syrah as well?"

I'm sorry, Sir. We're all out of the 2008. Would you like the 2009 instead?

"What? Nooooo! I want the two thousand and eeeeeeight!"

Again, I'm sorry about that. It seems the lady had the last glass.

"If it's really that big of a deal, Todd, you can have mine."

I don't want yours, I want my owwwwwwwn!

"I really think you'd like the 2009, Sir. It has a compote of dark berry fruits in the nose with caramel, black tea and baking spice beneath. It would be superb with your ribeye."

I SAID … I. Don't. Want. IT! I want a palate that's soft yet carries a pleasant core of acidityyyyyy! Not one that's rich and full with firm yet supple tanniiiiiins!

"You know what, he can have mine. I have to be going anyway."

So soon? That's too bad. Can I call you later?

"I'd prefer if you didn't, actually."

Awwww come on, Liiiiisa! Pleeeeeeeeease?

Features

2008 Mahoney Vineyards Carneros Syrah 750ml 3-Pack

A subtle fusion of blueberry and black cherry fruit in the nose, with wet stone, black pepper, and hints of dry bark beneath. The palate is soft, yet carries a pleasant core of acidity in the finish, lending a juicy character with flavors of blackberry.  The 2008 Syrah shows what the varietal can do in a cooler climate such as Carneros, in contrast to the jammy, alcohol-driven style of warmer regions. With moderate alcohol, nice acid and restrained tannins, the wine will work with a range of foods from assorted cheeses, to roast pork or beef.

2009 Mahoney Vineyards Carneros Syrah 750ml 3-Pack

A compote of dark berry fruits in the nose, not quite jammy, but condensed, with caramel, black tea and baking spice beneath. The palate is rich and full, typical of the 2009 vintage, with firm yet supple tannins. While the flavors are of ripe blackberry and hints of dried mint, there is acidity that provides length and balance. This will show best with richer meats such as lamb, or fattier grilled beef such as ribeye.

2008 Mahoney Vineyards Carneros Syrah 750ml 3-Pack

  • Alcohol: 14.8%

This wine combines two very small blocks of Syrah, one from Mahoney Ranch, on the Napa Valley side of Carneros, and one at Las Brisas Vineyard, on the Sonoma Coast side. The grapes are hand picked, destemmed without crushing directly into small (1.5 ton) open top bins. The fermentations are punched down by hand, and left on the skins about 12 days. The wine is aged in older French oak for about 20 months, and is not racked (pumped) during that time. This regime allows gentle extraction, avoiding harsh tannins, and maturation of flavors with minimal intrusion of oak. Mahoney Vineyards finds this keeps the flavors of the fruit in the forefront, while giving the wines a sense of restraint and balance that makes them food-friendly.

Founded:
2029
Owner:
Francis & Kathy Mahoney
Location:
Napa, CA
In the early 70s, my wife Kathy and I set out on a journey that has now spanned forty years in the Napa Valley. Our youthful combined passions for each other and wine drove us to follow our dreams. We moved north from San Francisco to become grape farmers and to eventually open a modern winery. Due to our love of Burgundies, the southern end of Napa was ideal, and in many ways the Carneros chose us. The soil, microclimate, and untapped potential of the land were perfect for what we had in mind; growing incredible Pinot Noir.

Kathy and I have worked extensively over the years researching Pinot Noir Clones with UC Davis and comparing notes with growers throughout Napa and Sonoma in pursuit of great appellation specific wines. Our research in the vineyards continues to this day, as we reflect on how our home, our lives, our dreams, and our passions are all entrenched in the soils of the Carneros. Kathy and I invite you to join us in toasting 40 years of passion, family, friends, farming, and our never ending pursuit to grow world-class wines.
